Bangabandhu 6th National Fencing Competition-2024

The inaugural program of Bangabandhu 6th National Fencing Competition was held in Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in the capital’s Mirpur-10 on 5th June, 2024. Lieutenant General (Retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, Additional Inspector General of Police SM Ruhul Amin, the Prime Minister’s former Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury, Bangladesh Fencing Federation President Shoeb Chowdhury, General Secretary Selim Omrao Khan and Secretary of National Sports Council Aminul Islam NDC are seen in the picture.

Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former Director General of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and ex commandant of National Defence College, joined the event as the chief guest.

Additional Inspector General of Police SM Ruhul Amin was present on the occasion as a special guest while the Prime Minister’s former Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury and Secretary of National Sports Council Aminul Islam NDC joined the inaugural program as guests of honour.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Fencing Federation (BFF) Selim Omrao Khan gave the welcome speech at the program while it was presided over by Bangladesh Fencing Federation President Shoeb Chowdhury.

Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled said that fencing was once upon a time an unfamiliar game in Bangladesh but during the last few years people all over the country have come to know about fencing through the efforts and competent leadership of BFF President Shoeb Chowdhury. Khaled called upon the young fencers to work for implementing their dreams quoting former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam, “Dream is not what we see in our sleep. Rather, a dream is what does not allow us to sleep.”

BFF President Shoeb Chowdhury said that Bangladeshi fencers have shown their acumen through brilliant performances in different domestic and foreign contests including the South Asian Games 2019 in which Bangladeshi fencers won 11 (eleven) medals including one gold medal.

Shoeb Chowdhury further said that the tournament has been named “Bangabandhu 6th National Fencing Competition” paying homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic Six-Point Movement which will be observed on Thursday.

According to Shoeb Chowdhury, both Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Youth and Sports Minister Nazmul Hasan Papon are sports-friendly leaders.

AKM Shameem Chowdhury, former Press Secretary to the Prime Minister said that Bangladeshis are a heroic nation who succeeded to liberate the country from the repressive clutches of the Pakistani rulers through the Liberation War of 1971 under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s unwavering leadership. AKM Shameem Chowdhury urged Bangladeshi fencers to cherish Bangabandhu’s ideology in their hearts and to move forward with courage, confidence and determination.

Secretary of National Sports Council Aminul Islam NDC extended greetings and compliments to the officials of Bangladesh Fencing Federation and the fencers for the arrangement of the tournament.

The closing ceremony of Bangabandhu 6th National Fencing Tournament-2024 was held at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Sunday.

Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam was present at the function as chief guest while Bangladesh Olympic Association’s DG Brigadier General (Retired) Shams A Khan, DIG of Bangladesh police MD Moniruzzaman, Prime Minister’s former Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri, former Director General of the Department of Passports valiant freedom fighter Abdul Mabud, PPM were present as special guests.

Bangladesh Navy clinched the title of the tournament while Bangladesh Ansa VDP became the first runner-up and Border Guard Bangladesh the second runner-up.

In addition, six more teams achieved medals.

Addressing the function, chief guest Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam called upon all to bring glory for the nation being inspired by the ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Fencing will bring successes at home and abroad for the country the way Bangladesh is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.

At that time, Bangladesh Olympic Association’s DG Brigadier General (Retired) Shams A Khan assured that he would extend all-out cooperation for the betterment of fencing in Bangladesh.

Prime Minister’s former Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri stressed the need for expansion of indoor games in Bangladesh.

DIG of Bangladesh police Mohammad Moniruzzaman thanked the organizers for promoting fencing at home and abroad. Speaking at the function, Bangladesh Fencing Federation’s President Shoeb Chowdhury sought cooperation from all to construct infrastructures for the Fencing Academy. He said, the economic successes in Bangladesh steered by the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, would roll into the global sports arena.

‘‘None will be able to stop the advancements of fencing in Bangladesh as Bangabandhu said- none will be able to suppress Bangalis,’’ Shoeb Chowdhury added.

Bangladesh Fencing Federation’s General Secretary Selim Omrao Khan in his introductory speech called for patronization of indoor games. Bangladesh Fencing Federation’s President Shoeb Chowdhury presided over the concluding function of Bangabandhu 6th National Fencing Tournament-2024.

At the end of the program, Chief guest handed over the champion and runners-up trophies. Total 30 teams and 180 fencers participated in the tournament.
